Read BioDiscover Recovery's virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP) brings structured, live addiction and mental health treatment to your home by secure video, with the same expectations as our in-person care.
Getting to treatment shouldn't be the hardest part of getting help. Each week, you'll join several live group sessions led by licensed clinicians and substance use disorder professionals. Groups focus on skills like CBT and DBT, coping with cravings, stress management and relapse prevention. Every two weeks, you'll also meet one-on-one with a therapist for mental health care and with a case manager, working from a treatment plan built around your recovery and mental health goals. Medication management is available when you need it.
Virtual doesn't mean less structured. Attendance and participation are expected, just as they are in person. As you progress, your team will help you step down to outpatient care. If you're struggling, they can move you to a higher level of care.

Virtual addiction treatment, also called telehealth addiction treatment or online rehab, is professional care for substance use disorder delivered through secure, live video instead of inside a treatment center. At Discover Recovery, it takes the form of a virtual intensive outpatient program: several hours of therapy a week, across multiple days, while you live at home.
Virtual IOP is a real level of care. It is not an app or a self-guided course. Sessions are scheduled, live and led by licensed clinicians and substance use disorder professionals. Attendance and participation are expected, and you'll practice new skills between sessions. That's the same commitment in-person IOP asks of you.
Each week combines group sessions, individual therapy and clinical support on a set schedule. Groups have sessions planned with morning and evening options, so you can plan work, school and family around treatment rather than putting them on hold.
Several live groups a week covering psychoeducation, CBT and DBT skills, relapse prevention, coping with cravings, stress management, motivation, and relationships and boundaries. Groups include both skills sessions and process groups.
A 50-minute one-on-one mental health session with your therapist every two weeks.
Psychiatric evaluation and medication management when clinically indicated.
A 30-minute session with your case manager every two weeks to coordinate your care.
An individualized plan for both substance use and mental health, with specific goals you help set.
Visits with a psychiatric nurse practitioner as needed.

You'll need a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a private place where you can speak openly.
Your telehealth sessions take place on an encrypted, HIPAA-compliant platform. Substance use treatment records also carry additional federal protection under 42 CFR Part 2, which limits how your information can be shared without your written consent. Joining from a private space protects your confidentiality, and the confidentiality of everyone else in your group.
The virtual program draws on the same evidence-based approaches our clinicians use in person. Your treatment plan is built around what you need, so not every client receives every therapy below.

Anxiety, depression and trauma often travel with substance use, and treating one while ignoring the other rarely works. Our virtual IOP treats co-occurring conditions, including anxiety, depression and PTSD, in the same program, with the same team.

Medication can make recovery from opioid and alcohol use disorders safer and more stable. If medication could help you, a psychiatric nurse practitioner on our team will evaluate you by video and recommend what is right for you. They will meet with you as often as your care needs, starting or adjusting medication when appropriate.
Many medications for addiction can be prescribed and managed through telehealth. Some, like monthly injections or methadone, require in-person care, and we'll help coordinate that when it's needed. As you stabilize, we'll help transition your prescriptions to your primary care provider or another outpatient prescriber, so your medication care continues after the program ends.
If you're physically dependent on alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Talk with us before you stop, and we'll help you start with medical detox if you need it at one of our residential facilities.
Telehealth treatment works best when your home life can support it. Our admissions team will help you decide during a confidential assessment, and if virtual care isn't the right place to start, we'll tell you honestly.
Don't see your plan? We'll verify your benefits for free. No insurance? Private pay and flexible payment plans are available.
Call us or check online: it takes minutes.
Telehealth care legally takes place where you are, not where your clinician is. To take part in virtual IOP, you need to be physically located in Oregon or Washington during each session. If you will be traveling during treatment, let your care team know ahead of time.
We serve adults 18 and older throughout Oregon and Washington, from cities to rural communities hours from a treatment center, including Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend and Medford, Vancouver, Olympia and Spokane. Our virtual IOP is licensed by OHA and accredited by CARF and The Joint Commission.
Clinical services are coordinated through our Portland outpatient center. The location below is where our in-person IOP team is based; virtual clients join sessions from home anywhere in Oregon or Washington.
An IOP can be your starting point for treatment or a step-down from a more intensive level of care. We help you find the right level of support for your recovery journey. Virtual treatment is one step in that continuum, not a standalone service. Many people begin with detox or residential treatment at our Washington centers, then continue with virtual IOP once they're home. If telehealth isn't giving you enough support, or you return to use, your care team can move you to a more intensive level of care.
A flexible outpatient program that allows most clients enough time for work and/or school. Treatment is delivered at our outpatient center several days a week, and clients return home or to sober living at night. Available at our Portland, OR location.

Addiction affects the whole family, and so does recovery. Family therapy sessions are available by telehealth, so the people who matter most can take part even if they live in another city.
If you're the one searching on behalf of someone you love: you don't have to have every answer before you call. We can help you understand the options and talk through how to raise treatment with them.

Most people start within a few days following their first call. Timing can vary depending on insurance and eligibility requirements.

Finishing IOP is a milestone, not the end of support. Our aftercare and alumni program continues by telehealth. It's a way to stay connected to people who understand what you're working toward, wherever you are.
We are accredited by both CARF and the Joint Commission. We're also licensed by the Oregon Health Authority and the Washington State Department of Health, LegitScript-certified, A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau and were named to Newsweek and Statista's America's Best Addiction Treatment Centers in 2023.

Read BioYes. Online rehab, more accurately called virtual or telehealth addiction treatment, is professional outpatient care delivered by live video. Discover Recovery's virtual IOP is a structured program with scheduled sessions three or five days a week, not a self-guided app. It's an outpatient level of care, so it doesn't replace medical detox or residential treatment for people who need them.
For many people, it can. Research reviewed by SAMHSA supports telehealth as an effective way to deliver substance use treatment, and one large study of a virtual IOP found patients attended more consistently and completed treatment more often than in-person patients at the same provider. Virtual care isn't right for everyone, which is why we assess fit first. We also have a specific protocol if our telehealth clients are struggling and can offer a higher level of care as appropriate.
It depends on your insurance plan and how long you're in treatment. Many plans cover telehealth addiction treatment. Verify your insurance or call 866.719.2173, and we'll explain your benefits and any out-of-pocket costs before you start.
Discover Recovery doesn't currently accept OHP for virtual treatment. Call us and we can discuss alternative payment options.
Most people do. Virtual IOP is designed to fit around work, school and family, with sessions scheduled for a time that works best for you. You'll need a private place to join from during session times.
Often, yes. Federal rules allow buprenorphine, the main medication in Suboxone, to be prescribed through telehealth when a prescriber determines it's appropriate. Some medications, like the Vivitrol injection, still require an in-person visit.
A return to use is a reason to adjust treatment, not a sign of failure. Your care team may add sessions, adjust medication or recommend a more intensive level of care, such as in-person PHP or residential treatment.
You need to be physically located in Oregon or Washington during each telehealth session, because licensing rules follow where the patient is. If you live elsewhere, call us and we will help you find options near you.
Yes. Sessions run on an encrypted, HIPAA-compliant platform, and substance use treatment records have additional federal privacy protections. You'll join from your own private space, and we'll talk with you about keeping sessions confidential at home.
Both follow the same evidence-based approach and the same intensity of three or five days a week. The difference is where you sit. If you live near Portland and want face-to-face support, our in-person intensive outpatient program may be the better fit.
