Intensive treatment with room to return home
Your path to recovery is deeply personal. Discover Recovery’s partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured level of care that provides the intensity you need for healing while allowing the flexibility to maintain a connection to your daily life.
Whether you’re transitioning from residential treatment or require a focused approach to your recovery, a PHP can meet you where you are so you can get the help you need.
What is a partial hospitalization program?
A partial hospitalization program is a structured treatment option that provides intensive care during the day, while allowing clients to return home—or to a sober living environment—each evening. PHP bridges the gap between inpatient treatment and more flexible outpatient care, offering a strong foundation for lasting recovery.
Typically, clients participating in PHP engage in six to eight hours of treatment, five days a week. This schedule combines therapy, skill-building, and medical supervision, allowing people to address the root causes of addiction while developing strategies for long-term success.
Our PHP is ideal for those who need a high level of treatment without the 24-hour supervision of residential care. It’s also a great step for those transitioning from an inpatient setting who need continued support to maintain their progress.
Who is a good candidate for a PHP?
A PHP may be appropriate if you:
- Have completed residential treatment and are ready for more independence
- Need intensive clinical support but do not require 24/7 supervision
- Live in a stable home or sober living environment
- Are motivated to engage in treatment and work toward recovery goals
- Are managing a co-occurring mental health condition in addition to substance use
Our team will complete a clinical assessment to determine if PHP is the best fit for your needs.
What are the benefits of PHP?
PHP provides a balance between clinical intensity and real-world application. Benefits include:
- Daily access to therapy and psychiatric support
- Continued connection to a treatment team
- A consistent weekly routine
- Skill-building and relapse prevention education
- Flexibility to return home at the end of each day
- A smoother transition from inpatient to independent living
For many people, PHP is the step that helps bridge internal change with external progress.

Frequently asked questions
What is the success rate of partial hospitalization programs?
Success rates vary depending on client engagement, program quality, and follow-up care. PHPs are widely regarded as effective, especially when used as part of a full continuum of care.
What is the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP is more intensive than IOP, typically involving six hours of treatment per day. IOP offers a lighter schedule, usually three hours per day, and may be better for those with fewer clinical needs.
Are there requirements to enter PHP?
Yes. Clients must complete an assessment to determine clinical appropriateness. A stable living environment and willingness to participate in daily programming are also important.
What is the average length of stay in PHP?
Most clients participate in PHP for two to four weeks. The exact timeline depends on progress, goals, and recommendations from your care team.
What should I leave at home during treatment?
We recommend leaving valuables, unapproved medications, and any items that may disrupt the group environment at home. Our admissions team will provide a full packing list before you arrive.
