Veterans and military service members often face a unique set of challenges, both during and after their service. These challenges can make transitioning to civilian life difficult and may lead to mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. They may also turn to drugs or alcohol to try and cope. Veterans addiction treatment programs can provide meaningful support while creating connections with the right resources for long-term success.
Veterans Need Help
According to some studies, veterans are diagnosed with substance use disorder (SUD) than civilians.1 This may be partly due to mental health conditions. Between veterans who have a mental health condition and those who don’t, SUDs are more prevalent among those who have a mental health condition.2
Many veterans struggle with their mental health, including trauma-related conditions like PTSD. Mental health conditions can lead to substance abuse as a way to cope with the emotional toll they cause. Additionally, the transition back to civilian life can be challenging for veterans and may result in feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety. These factors can all contribute to the development of SUDs.
Discover Recovery’s Tailored Approach
The veterans program at Discover Recovery provides detox and residential dual diagnosis treatment in Washington State. By taking a holistic approach, we’re able to help veterans stop depending on drugs and alcohol while learning how to cope with emotional triggers and challenging situations without relapsing.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
Using trauma-informed therapy, our team works with veterans to address and heal from underlying trauma that may be contributing to their substance abuse. This type of therapy acknowledges the impact of past experiences on current behaviors and focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment for healing. It works to avoid re-traumatization and instead empowers veterans to process their experiences and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
At Discover Recovery, veterans are assigned both a master’s level therapist and a substance use disorder professional to address mental health and substance use issues simultaneously. This integrated approach helps veterans better understand the connections between their mental health and substance abuse, leading to more effective treatment outcomes.
VA Community Care Partner
We are proud to be part of the VA Community Care Network. This allows us to work with veterans when they’re not able to access care at VA medical centers. Many veterans have a difficult time getting care from providers who work seamlessly with the VA.
