What is medical detox?
Medical detox provides support while you clear harmful substances like drugs or alcohol from your system. It’s the important first step in recovery, breaking physical dependency and helping your body reset to its natural state. At Discover Recovery, we see detox as more than just a medical process. It’s an opportunity to begin healing your body, mind, and spirit in a safe, supportive environment.Â
Medical detox at Discover Recovery
At Discover Recovery, we take a customized approach to detoxification. During this phase, we focus on more than just addressing withdrawal symptoms. Our program integrates personalized planning, 24/7 clinical oversight, and respectful, trauma-informed care.Â
- Personalized detox plans: Your care team builds a plan around your substance use history, medical needs, and recovery goals.Â
- Medical supervision: Our licensed team monitors symptoms, checks vitals, and manages risks around the clock.Â
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT): When appropriate, we use medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms and improve safety.Â
- Quiet, private environment: Comfort matters. Clients detox in a serene, secure setting that supports emotional and physical rest.Â
Your care team may include board-certified addiction physicians, nurse practitioners, master’s-level clinicians, registered nurses, and addiction counselors. Â

What symptoms does detox treat?
Medical detox addresses the physical and emotional symptoms that occur when someone stops using addictive substances. We provide care for clients recovering from:Â
Alcohol use
Withdrawal symptoms may include tremors, anxiety, sweating, insomnia, nausea, and—in severe cases—seizures or delirium tremens (DTs). These risks require medical supervision.Â
Opioid use
Symptoms may include muscle aches, restlessness, nausea, chills, vomiting, and cravings. While not typically life-threatening, opioid withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable and emotionally destabilizing.Â
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous if unmanaged. Symptoms include severe anxiety, confusion, heart palpitations, and in some cases, seizures.Â
Other substances
We also support detox from prescription medications, stimulants like methamphetamine or cocaine, and cases involving multiple substances.Â

Discover Recovery's continuum of care
Detox is just one part of a broader recovery process. At Discover Recovery, clients can access a full range of services that support long-term progress. Our care model is designed to meet you where you are and grow with you over time.Â
Detox
The first phase of treatment focuses on physical stabilization. Clients receive 24/7 medical care, withdrawal management, and preparation for the next level of care.
Residential treatment
After detox, many clients move into our residential program in Camas or Long Beach. This immersive, structured setting includes daily therapy, psychiatric care, wellness activities, and support for co-occurring mental health conditions.
Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
PHP provides clinical structure while giving clients more autonomy. Clients attend treatment sessions during the day and return home or to sober housing in the evenings. This is a good fit for those transitioning from residential or stepping into care for the first time.
Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
A flexible outpatient program that allows most clients enough time for work and/or school. Treatment is delivered at our outpatient center several days a week, and clients return home or to sober living at night. Available at our Portland, OR location.
Sober living
Clients who need transitional support can stay in our sober living homes in Camas or Long Beach. These homes offer accountability, community, and structure as clients continue treatment or return to work or school.
Aftercare
Recovery doesn’t stop when treatment ends. Our team helps clients build personalized aftercare plans that may include therapy referrals, alumni check-ins, peer support groups, and long-term coaching.
Frequently asked questions
How long does detox take?
Most clients spend three to seven days in detox. The timeline depends on which substances are involved, how long you’ve used them, and your physical and mental health at admission.Â
What are the side effects of detox?
Withdrawal symptoms may include anxiety, restlessness, headaches, nausea, sweating, insomnia, and mood swings. Our team will manage your symptoms with comfort and safety in mind.Â
Is detox always required before treatment?
If you are physically dependent on alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines, detox is a necessary and often life-saving step. For other substances or milder use patterns, your provider may recommend starting with outpatient care instead.Â
Is detox safe?
Yes, with proper clinical supervision. Detoxing alone—especially from alcohol or benzos—can be dangerous. At Discover Recovery, safety protocols and 24/7 support ensure the process is closely monitored.Â
Do you treat people using multiple substances?
Yes. Our team regularly supports clients who use more than one substance. We’ll monitor withdrawal interactions and adjust your plan as needed. Â
What happens once detox is over?
You’ll move into the next phase of care with a plan in place. Most clients continue with inpatient or outpatient treatment while exploring additional support like group therapy, medication management, or sober living.Â
